The GS401 is a legendary and revolutionary Hi-Fi speaker that was released in around 1973 by London’s Gale Electronics and Design. They’re quite unique in design… a fully sealed (infinite baffle) enclosure fitted with two 8” woofers, a Peerless 4” midrange driver and a Celestion tweeter. The drivers are crossed over at 475Hz and 5kHz.
They had an unusually high power handling for their era, labelled as 100 watts, but in fact quite comfortable with handling more. In fact, due to the infinite baffle design these speakers aren’t particularly sensitive, so really don’t shine until they ARE being driven with a bit of power. We’d recommend an amplifier rated from 40 watts through to about 120 watts per channel. Impedance is quoted as being 4 to 8Ω, varying across frequencies, so we would suggest that the Gales be the ONLY pair of speakers you have hooked to your amp. The mid levels and high levels are adjustable on each speaker via controls mounted on the rear. In keeping with their revolutionary design GS401s were designed to be run in the horizontal plane, so perfect for shelf or stand mounting, but, you won’t be arrested if you do run them in the more traditional vertical plane and will no doubt still love the sound. There are 3 versions of the GS401, the “A” which featured chrome ends, this one, the “B” with walnut veneer enclosures and flat removable fabric grilles, and the “C” which was also walnut finish but with contoured foam grilles. Stunning things with a unique design philosophy, excellent reproduction and punchy sound.
