HARTLEY
Of of the most famous mega speakers from the USA's great period of HiFi excess...the Hartley 24" 4 way Concertmaster.
These were locally sold by Encel Electronics so no doubt the boxes would have been locally constructed (under licence) by Aranmar acoustics for the official importer Interdyn.
As a later design they had the upgraded Decca ribbon tweeter - far superior to the Philips tweeter used in the ordinary version.
Like many great speakers of the 1960s and 70s these are normally let down by cheap crossovers. This pair has had customer built/tweeked crossovers using air cored inductors and modifying the crossover points to place most of the music on the magnificiant MSG220 10" full range driver and avoid any crossover points in the critical 200Hz to 2600Hz "voice" region.
Currently they crossover actively at 130hz to the 24" woofer using an Accuphase F5 two way active crossover then run a passive crossover at 4KHz to the Decca ribbon. This results in a much cleaner sound than the original design.
Price is less than the component value alone and includes the Accuphase crossover.
You will need two amplifiers to drive these - your main amp (30w will do...but it must be a good clean 30w) and an amp just to drive the 24" woofer in the 20Hz to 130Hz region which can be even a basic solid state amp of 30w as there is no critical music information in this region.)
Boxes are large - approx 1m H X 80cm W X 40cm D and use a semi dipole open baffle loading for the 24" woofer....better ask HWMBO before you bring these babies home! ;-)
